It all began in 1965 with a research team at the University of Florida.
Its aim was to develop a drink for professional athletes that could quickly and fully replenish fluids and nutrients, while preventing dehydration and problems caused by overheating of the body, such as muscle cramps and exhaustion due to heatstroke. The drink was tested on players of the professional American football team Florida Gators, which is how it got the name “Gatorade”
That season, the Gators, strengthened by Gatorade, had far fewer problems with dehydration and considerably greater endurance. Thanks to their fitness and stamina at the end of matches, their opponents nicknamed them the “second-half team”. They managed to win their very first title, the Orange Bowl, and, like in a fairy tale, worked their way up from the very bottom to the absolute top. In cooperation with top athletes, its formula is continually tested and improved (Gatorade Sport Science Institute).
